The Street Surface Assessment Vehicle (SSAV), developed for the City of Houston by Idea, has transformed the way the fourth largest city in the U.S. manages the maintenance of its road surfaces. Watch the video to find out more about the various technical components. Once results are gathered, the identification and prioritization of areas of need is enabled, allowing for the most efficient use of funds.
The new Street Surface Assessment Vehicle revolutionizes city roadway pavement management.
The City of Houston and Idea have partnered to develop a unique solution to give the City more ownership of its pavement assessment program and conduct faster assessments for less money.
The new SSAV (Street Surface Assessment Vehicle) allows for efficient, non-subjective, timely assessment of roadways.
The customized vehicle measures pavement conditions using laser profilers, GPS equipment, automatic crack detection and immersive video cameras. GIS integration and customizable pavement rating scoring improve decision-making. Extra functionality can be easily added to the software solution, in the future, as needs expand.
Data results allow the City to quickly find a street rating by segment, see condition history, view immersive video of street segments, generate reports, and soon, identify sub-surface pavement condition to analyze sinkhole risks.
The City of Houston owns the customized data visualization software built by Idea. With this innovative new solution, the City controls its own roadway assessments, and can perform prioritized repairs faster. Budgets are optimized and maximized, avoiding the need to contract with third party services firms.
